Lawyers say tumours have also been detected in the journalist’s chest. She wants to return to the detention centre because of the conditions at the medical facility.
New information has emerged about the health of imprisoned Meydan TV editor-in-chief Aynur Elgunesh.
According to her lawyers, medical examinations revealed an 18-millimetre kidney stone, and urgent surgery was recommended. The stone had previously been reported to measure 14 millimetres.
The lawyers also say that tumours have been detected in Aynur Elgunesh’s chest. They report that she has pre-existing problems with her uterus, but no examinations have yet been conducted in this regard.
The journalist is currently being held at the Penitentiary Service’s Medical Facility. According to reports, she is dissatisfied with the unsanitary conditions and inadequate facilities there and wants to return to Baku Pre-Trial Detention Centre.
Her lawyers are making requests for Aynur Elgunesh to undergo more detailed medical examinations and have the surgery performed at another state-run or private hospital.
Aynur Elgunesh was transferred to the Penitentiary Service’s Medical Facility on 18 October due to a deterioration in her health. Lawyer Zibeyda Sadigova had previously said that the journalist had serious health problems, had undergone 17 operations to date, and had been preparing for another operation before her arrest.
According to information from the journalist’s relatives, her condition deteriorated further on 14 October at Baku Pre-Trial Detention Centre. Her blood pressure reportedly rose, her face turned yellowish, and she experienced tightness in the diaphragm area and difficulty breathing.
Aynur Elgunash has been in detention since 6 December 2024. A total of 12 people are facing charges in the “Meydan TV case.” They have been charged primarily with smuggling and under other articles of the Criminal Code. The journalists deny the charges and say they were arrested because of their professional activities.
