Aynur Elgunesh, the imprisoned editor-in-chief of Meydan TV, is reportedly in critical condition. According to her relatives, a decision to transfer the journalist to the medical facility, where she should receive treatment, is being delayed.

“The ultrasound doctor has examined her three times, and each time the same diagnosis was made: her kidney is close to failing and urgent intervention is needed. The reason given for delaying her transfer to the medical facility was, ‘Let another doctor come and examine her once more.’ If the same diagnosis has been made three times, why is another examination necessary?!” the journalist’s relatives ask.

The journalist’s relatives say that her health deteriorated on 14 October at the Baku Pretrial Detention Centre, where she is being held.

“Her blood pressure rose to 150/80, and her complexion turned yellow. She experienced tightness in her diaphragm and had difficulty breathing. She took medication to lower her blood pressure, after which it dropped below normal to 80/50. Aynur is suffering because of the pressure on her kidney, and her blood pressure is constantly fluctuating. Such indifference can be described as torture.”

Elgunesh’s relatives note that there is no doctor at the Baku Pretrial Detention Centre who can prescribe treatment appropriate to her diagnosis.

“She must be transferred to the medical facility to receive treatment. Every passing day works against her, and irreversible complications may develop. You can already tell from her face that the process taking place inside her body is critical. She has lost weight, her eyes are sunken, she looks very pale, and she frequently experiences pain.

This is a matter of health, and its seriousness must be recognised. We do not understand what they are waiting for. As her relatives, we are sounding the alarm over Aynur Elgunesh’s health,” the journalist’s relatives said, expressing their concern.
