Blogger Convicted in Azerbaijan Requests Extradition to Israel

Alexander Lapshin, Israeli-Russian blogger recently sentenced in Azerbaijan to three years in prison for violating the state border, has requested extradition to Israel to serve out his term.

This was stated by his lawyer Eduard Chernin.

Alexander Lapshin met with the Consulate of Israel on July 26, and work is allegedly underway to have him extradited, his lawyer added.

In turn, the head of the department for human rights and public relations of the Ministry of Justice of Azerbaijan Faig Gurbanov stated that the issue of extradition of the blogger to Israel will be considered after the court verdict comes into force.

Recall that on July 20, Alexander Lapshin was imprisoned for 3 years. The prosecutor demanded 6 years for Lapshin. imprisonment for 6 years and 6 months with serving in a general regime colony.

Alexander Lapshin, who is a citizen of Israel, Russia and Ukraine, was accused and convicted of illegally crossing the state border of Azerbaijan into Nagorno Karabakh, as well as for open appeals aimed at violating the territorial integrity of the country.

After being detained by law enforcement bodies of Belarus on December 15, 2016 in Minsk, Lapshin was extradited on February 7, 2017 to Azerbaijan.
