President of the French region of Ile-de-France and candidate in the next presidential election, Valérie Pécresse, visited Khankendi on December 22, as part of her presidential campaign.

According to a note of protest released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, the trip was illegal.

The Ministry argues that Pécresse’s visit, which was accompanied by other French politicians, was a violation of Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It was added that the French citizens, who allegedly seriously violated the requirements of the relevant laws of Azerbaijan, will be held responsible in accordance with the Azerbaijani national legislation.

Jeyhun Bayramov, Minister of Foreign Affairs in Azerbaijan, claims that the visit damaged the Azerbaijani-French bilateral relations, as well as France’s reputation in the region and the role it can play in the normalization of Azerbaijani-Armenian relations.

The names of the French citizens visiting Azerbaijan were also included under the list of undesirable people in the country.
