Ibrahim Raisi expressed his condolences to the President of Azerbaijan regarding the attack on the embassy

On January 28, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ibrahim Raisi, called the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev.

According to the official website of the President of Azerbaijan, Raisi expressed his condolences to President Ilham Aliyev and the family of the deceased on the death of Orkhan Askerov, the head of the security service of the embassy in Tehran, and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

It is noted that Aliyev strongly condemned the terrorist act against the embassy and “expressed his hope that the bloody terrorist act will be thoroughly investigated and that the criminals will be punished.” Ilham Aliyev also stressed the importance of conducting the investigation in a transparent manner.

The head of state also emphasized the importance of ensuring the security of diplomatic missions.

Raisi said that the governments of Iran and Azerbaijan do not allow their relations to be affected by the insinuations of the two people’s villains.

This was reported by Iranian sources:

“The President of Iran expressed his condolences to the people and government of Azerbaijan. Saying that the friendly and brotherly relations between the peoples of Iran and Azerbaijan are based on unbreakable cultural and historical ties, Raisi added that the governments of Iran and Azerbaijan do not allow their relations to be influenced by the insinuations of evildoers. In his turn, Aliyev thanked the Iranian president for expressing his sympathy to Azerbaijan and said that this is an unexpected crime, but the cooperation of the two countries in this field should be so strong that no one has the opportunity to break the friendly relations between the two countries” .

On January 27, around 8:30 am Baku time, there was an armed attack on the Embassy of Azerbaijan in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The attacker, Yasin Huseynzade, killed Orkhan Asgarov, the head of the security service, and injured two others.

Embassy security officer Vasif Tagiyev neutralized Huseynzade.

Although Yasin Huseynzade explained the attack by the fact that his wife had been detained in the embassy for a while nine months ago, the official authorities of Azerbaijan rejected what he said.

Calling the incident a terrorist, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry summoned the Iranian ambassador to Baku, Abbas Mousavi, on the same day.

At the meeting, it was said that the armed raid against the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Tehran, the act of terrorism, was strongly condemned, and such attacks against diplomatic missions were unacceptable. It was also brought to the ambassador’s attention that it is the duty of the receiving party to protect the building of the mission from all kinds of attacks and ensure the safety of its employees, based on the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

The State Security Service opened a criminal case related to the terrorist attack against the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Iran .
