PACE deputies have adopted a declaration, and the European Parliament is scheduled to discuss the professional activities of an economist.

Gubad Ibadoglu, the Chairman of the Azerbaijan Democracy and Welfare Party (ADR) and a professor, was released from prison following a decision by the Narimanov District Court on April 22.

According to the court’s ruling, Ibadoglu has been placed under house arrest.

Ibadoglu, affiliated with the London School of Economics, was detained on July 23 under charges outlined in Article 204.3.1 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to involvement in organized counterfeit activities. Subsequently, on August 25, he faced additional charges under Article 167-3.1 for purportedly engaging with extremist materials.

Upon his arrest, Ibadoglu alleged that he was targeted under orders from President Ilham Aliyev.

Before his release to house arrest, his daughter, Jala Bayramova, appealed to the public, citing her father’s deteriorating health.

A declaration for Ibadoglu’s release, endorsed by 26 PACE deputies, was accepted on April 22. The deputies urged for the immediate implementation of the European Court of Human Rights’ temporary measures, advocating for the release of Ibadoglu and other political detainees in Azerbaijan.

The European Parliament is also addressing Ibadoglu’s case, with discussions scheduled for April 24 and a resolution slated for voting on April 25. The resolution also addresses the unlawful detentions of others, including activist Ilhamiz Guliyev and personnel from “AbzasMedia” and “Toplum TV.”

Last September, the European Parliament issued an 8-point resolution concerning Ibadoglu, demanding his immediate release from Azerbaijani custody.
