The week of November 13-18 saw Mehriban Aliyeva renouncing to her UNESCO position, Baku condemning a resolution from the French Senate and the opening of new diplomatic representations from Azerbaijan.
Mehriban Aliyeva renounced her title of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador
First Vice-President of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva has addressed a letter to the UN Secretary General for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO), Audrey Azoulay, to terminate her position as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.
This was announced on November 15 by the National Commission of Azerbaijan for UNESCO.
The letter notes that Mehriban Aliyeva “can no longer fulfill the duties of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, given her involvement and special role in the large-scale restoration and revival of the territories of Azerbaijan liberated from Armenian occupation – Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur.”
Mehriban Aliyeva has been a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador since 2004.
Azerbaijan-French relations: Baku condemned the resolution of the French Senate
The French Senate adopted on Wednesday a non-binding resolution providing sanctions against Azerbaijan and recognizing the state of Artsakh.
As a responde, France’s charge d’affaires in Azerbaijan Julien Le Lan was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). He was presented with a protest note of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the resolution.
Moreover, the MFA called the resolution of the French Senate on November 15 a document based “on lies and slander“. The Azerbaijani ministry stated that the document does not serve peace, stability and progress in the region by encouraging revanchist forces in Armenia, and is far from the “promotion of sustainable peace” mentioned in the name of the resolution.
Azerbaijan opens an embassy in Israel and a representative office in Palestine
An embassy of Azerbaijan in Israel will be established and the country will also open a diplomatic mission in Palestine.
At today’s session of the Milli Majlis, the deputies discussed the draft Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan “On the Establishment of the Representation Office of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the State of Palestine (Ramallah)”.
The opening of Azerbaijani embassies in Albania and Kenya was also discussed and approved.
