Soltan Mirzayev, 34, joined the rebel fight in Syria, which started in August, 2013. He was killed on January 3. According to his wife, Matanat Mirzayeva, he left home with five manats in his pocket and all of his expenses were paid by the fellow Wahhabi fighters. He went through four months of training before joining the battle. He fought against the President Bashar Assad’s forces.
According to conflict expert Arif Yunus’ data, by that time 44 Azerbaijanis died in the Syrian conflict. Among them were 33 Salafi (Wahhabi) and 11 Shia Muslims. The Salafis fight with Al-Qaeda, while the Shias are on Assad’s side.
