NIDA Movement activist Bayram Mammadov has stopped his hunger strike in prison.
He first refused food on June 23 in Penal Institution No. 13.
Farman Mammadov, the father of the activist, relayed this information to Turan News Agency.
According to him, on June 27 Bayram Mammadov called home and said that he stopped the hunger strike he had began in protest of the detention conditions.
“Bayram Mammadov was protesting the placement of his bed next to the toilet. After beginning his hunger strike, the prison leadership said they would agree to relocate him”, said the activist’s father.
Meanwhile, Ombudsman’s Office lawyer Rashid Rumzade and the Penitentiary Service’s press service have said that they will investigate the issue, but Bayram Mammadov’s condition remains unchanged.
Rashid Rumzade said they were investigating the issue.
The press service of the Penitentiary Service also said that they would investigate Bayram Mammadov’s allegations and then spread relevant information.
Bayram Mammadov was apprehended with Qiyas Ibrahimov in May 2016 after writing the slogans “Happy slave day” on a statue of ex-President Heydar Aliyev.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, heroin was found in Mammadov’s possession during a search of his apartment. The young activist was sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Grave Crimes Court.
Amnesty International has recognized Bayram Mammadov and Qiyas Ibrahimov as prisoners of conscience.
