On December 18, 22 railway tankers filled with AI-95 gasoline were dispatched from Azerbaijan to Armenia by rail.
Euronews writes that this is the first such fuel export in decades and is considered a concrete step toward the normalization of relations between the two countries.
A total of 1,210 tons of gasoline produced by SOCAR will be delivered to Armenia via the territory of Georgia.
The agreement on fuel exports was reached on November 28 in Gabala between the deputy prime ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Currently, Armenia imports more than 60 percent of its fuel from Russia, with the remainder coming from Iran, Romania, Malta, and Turkey.
Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has instructed that no fee be charged for the first fuel transit from Azerbaijan to Armenia through Georgian territory.
The conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia began toward the end of the 1980s. In the early 1990s, Azerbaijan’s Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts were occupied. As a result of the 44-day war in 2020 and a one-day military operation in 2023, Baku restored its sovereignty over all its territories.
On August 8, 2025, officials of Azerbaijan and Armenia, who had been in conflict for more than 30 years, initialed the text of a peace agreement in Washington. In the initialed text, the parties recognize each other’s territorial integrity and emphasize the withdrawal of mutual claims.
With the participation of the U.S. President, the parties also signed a statement on the outcomes of the meeting. According to the statement, unobstructed connectivity will be established between the main part of Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan through southern Armenia. This route, called TRIPP, will preserve Armenia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and jurisdiction.
