The week of September 5-9 saw Azerbaijan releasing Armenian soldiers, 2022 Human Development Index and teachers having their salaries increased.
Released soldiers are handed over to Armenia
Azerbaijan handed over five Armenian soldiers who were in prison. The Supreme Court reduced the six-year prison sentence to one year, eight months and 25 days, and they were released on September 8. They were immediately sent back to their home country.
The soldiers were released because of a bilateral agreement achieved on August 31 during the meeting between the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan in Brussels at the initiative of the President of the Council of the European Union Charles Michel. The meeting happened in Brussels.
The Armenian soldiers were detained in Hadrut forests in Khojavend region in December 2020, about a month after the end of the Fall 2020 War. Azerbaijan claims that the soldiers armed themselves and secretly settled in those areas, where they engaged in terrorist provocations against Azerbaijan. They were captured by the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan on December 13.
HDI: Azerbaijan ranks 91st among 195 countries
According to the UN 2022 Human Development Index, Azerbaijan ranks 91st among 195 countries in terms of longevity, education and economic well-being.
Even though the world trend shows a decrease on the Index, Azerbaijan got 0.756 points, increasing slightly from last year, when it was 0.745. In 2020, this figure was 0.741.
According to the Gender Inequality Index, Azerbaijan ranks 70th among 177 countries. Women represented in the country’s parliament made up 18.2 percent of the total number.
Minister: “Thousands of teachers will receive salary increases from September”
Minister of Science and Education Emin Amrullayev affirmed at an event of the Human Resources Center of the Institute of Education that the salary of thousands of teachers will increase all over the country.
For being eligible for receiving the bonus, teachers had to go through a certification process. Amrullayev stated that “despite the rumors before the certification process, 98 percent of teachers participated in the certification process. At the end of the process, we experienced good results”.
The minister said that nearly eleven thousand teachers participated in the certification. Although 78 percent of teachers successfully passed certification, 22 percent did not achieved the necessary score. He also noted that those who do not get the minimum score can take part in re-certification while keeping their job for one year.
