A rally in support of Ukraine was held in front of the Ukrainian embassy in Baku on February 27.
The participants chanted slogans like “Glory to Ukraine”, “Reject Putin”, “Ukraine, Azerbaijan is with you” and expressed their support to the Eastern European country. Both Azerbaijan and Ukraine were republics of the former Soviet Union.
Although the police created various obstacles on the streets of the embassy to prevent the manifestation, citizens still found a way to participate in the action.
People who were stopped by the police argued that the aim of the Azerbaijani government was to prevent them from protesting “against the oppression of Putin’s regime”.
When asked why the obstacles were created, the police answered they were obeying orders. The Interior Ministry has not released any comments about Sunday’s action yet.
This is the second protest held supporting Ukraine in the Azerbaijani capital. On February 24, a small mobilization took place in front of the Russian embassy against the deployment of troops in Ukraine, and the signed alliance document between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin. As a result, police intervened and forcibly removed people from the area.
