The court has sent the file regarding Avaz Zeynalli’s illness for a medical report.
At the hearing held today at the Nizami District Court, presided over by Judge Nigar Gadirli, the appeal regarding the release of detained “Xural TV” director Avaz Zeynalli due to his illness was reviewed.
Since Avaz Zeynalli was not brought to court, the hearing was held online.
Lawyer Rashad Aliyev stated that a detailed examination of his client’s illness had been conducted and that a cancer diagnosis was confirmed.
Another lawyer, Fakhraddin Mehdiyev, also requested that the process not be delayed due to the severity of his client’s condition and that a decision be made today.
The court decided to send the file for a medical report to confirm Avaz Zeynalli’s illness. According to the decision, Avaz Zeynalli will be evaluated by a health commission regarding his illness.
The process has been postponed to an unspecified date.
Avaz Zeynalli has been in prison since September 9, 2022. He is accused of accepting large bribes, committing fraud, and unlawfully influencing the decision of an official. However, the journalist does not consider himself guilty.
According to a ruling by the Baku Serious Crimes Court on February 26, 2024, Avaz Zeynalli was sentenced to 9 years in prison. On December 18, the Court of Appeals reviewed his appeal and reduced the sentence by 2 months.
On April 14, 2025, Avaz Zeynalli’s wife, Malahat Zeynalli, wrote on her Facebook profile that Avaz Zeynalli had been diagnosed with cancer.
