Former MP Huseyn Abdullayev has started a hunger strike in prison. In a letter he wrote about his decision, Abdullayev stressed that the reason for the hunger strike was the failure of the Azerbaijani government to implement the decision of the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.

Huseyn Abdullayev, who had received asylum in Germany, arrived in Turkey in April 2018 and was detained in Istanbul. A day later, he was brought to Baku. He was sentenced to 6 years in prison by the Baku Military Court on charges of fraud, tax evasion and money laundering. The higher courts upheld the verdict.

Zeynab Abdullayeva, the mother of the former MP, confirmed to Meydan TV that her son has gone on hunger strike. She said that her son was arrested and imprisoned on false charges.

"What is the meaning and essence of this asylum, the passport issued to the emigrants and the Geneva Convention signed by about 200 countries? Why did the Azerbaijani state ratify the known convention, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in its parliament?" Huseyn Abdullayev wrote in his letter.

Mehman Sadigov, head of the public relations department of the Penitentiary Service, told Meydan TV that they had no information about this.

His mother was also punished in the same criminal case as her son and sentenced to a fine of 4,000 AZN.

However, both refute the accusations and maintain their innocence.

"I was illegally abducted from Turkey and brought to Azerbaijan. I have been convicted on completely baseless, biased and directly politically motivated charges and have been forcibly detained," Abdullayev said.
