Opposition politician Tofig Yagublu, whose health significantly declined following a 40-day hunger strike, remains in custody without being moved to a civilian hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to his daughter, Nigar Hezi, who spoke to Meydan TV, multiple appeals to both the facility\u2019s administration and the Penitentiary Service have gone unanswered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAfter 40 days of hunger, Tofig Yagublu must have been transferred to a civilian hospital. The Medical Facility of the Penitentiary Service is not suitable for keeping him in his current condition. Tofig Yagublu requires special care and must be under the protection of his family. He must also be under constant medical supervision. Unfortunately, the court neither placed him under house arrest nor allowed his transfer to a civilian hospital,\u201d says Nigar Hazi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tofig Yagublu began his hunger strike on April 1 in protest of his imprisonment and ended it on May 10\u201440 days later\u2014after his health sharply declined and at his daughter\u2019s request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was sentenced to 9 years in prison on March 10, 2025, by the Baku Serious Crimes Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yagublu was found guilty under the Criminal Code for fraud causing large-scale damage and for forging or using fake documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The politician considers the charges to be fabricated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Throughout his political career, Tofig Yagublu has been arrested multiple times, both administratively and for long terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2013, he was arrested for allegedly organizing protests in Ismayilli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was sentenced to 5 years in prison and released in 2017 by a presidential pardon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Later, on March 22, 2020, he was arrested again on charges of hooliganism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was claimed that he caused a car accident near the \u201c8th Kilometer Market\u201d and then insulted and injured the driver of the other car and the driver\u2019s wife. This time, the Nizami District Court sentenced him to 4 years and 3 months in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Immediately after the verdict\u2014on September 2, 2020\u2014Tofig Yagublu announced a hunger strike to protest judicial injustice, which he continued for 17 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Due to the deterioration of his condition, he was transferred from the pre-trial detention center to a clinic. On September 18, the Baku Court of Appeal placed him under house arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
