\n Human Rights Watch (HRW) has given its
\n
\n Alison Des Forges Award
\n <\/a>
\n \u00a0for extraordinary activism to Azerbaijani investigative journalist Khadija Ismayilova, who was jailed last December.\n<\/p>\n

\n According to HRW, the award celebrates those who risk their lives to protect the rights and dignity of others.\n<\/p>\n

\n The prize is named after the late activist Alison Des Forges, famous for her work towards peace and stability in Rwanda after the 1994 genocide.\n<\/p>\n

\n Ismayilova, an award-winning reporter for OCCRP and Radio Free Europe\/Radio Liberty (RFE\/RL), was detained by Azerbaijani authorities in December 2014 and accused of a series of charges that many human rights groups say were fabricated to justify jailing her.\n<\/p>\n

\n In September this year, Ismayilova was sentenced to
\n
\n seven and a half years in prison
\n <\/a>
\n \u00a0for embezzlement, tax evasion, abuse of power, and running an illegal business.\n<\/p>\n

\n She was acquitted of a further charge of inciting a former colleague to attempt suicide.\n<\/p>\n

\n Ismayilova had reported extensively on corruption in the upper echelons of the Azerbaijani government.\n<\/p>\n

\n She believes her investigative work is the real reason behind her legal troubles, claiming at a
\n
\n hearing on July 24
\n <\/a>
\n \u00a0that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev \u201cimprisoned me to hinder my journalistic activity.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n HRW praised Ismayilova\u2019s pursuit of transparency and attempts to tackle corruption in her home country in the face of harassment and smear campaigns.\n<\/p>\n

\n Ismayilova has won several other awards for her journalism.\n<\/p>\n

\n In May 2012, she was presented with the Gerd Bucerius Free Press Award for Eastern Europe.\n<\/p>\n

\n In October the same year, she received the Courage of Journalism Award from the Washington-based International Women\u2019s Media Foundation.\n<\/p>\n

\n She was given a Global Shining Light Award at the Global Investigative Journalism Conference in 2013 for her reporting to expose the business dealings of the family of Azerbaijan\u2019s President Ilham Aliyev.\n<\/p>\n

\n The awards didn\u2019t stop when she went to prison.\n<\/p>\n

\n This year, she was named winner of the
\n
\n PEN American Center\u2019s Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award
\n <\/a>
\n , as well as the Anna Politkovskaya Award for corruption reporting.\n<\/p>\n
