\n The Steering Committee of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum has expressed its

\n about President Ilham Aliyev\u2019s use of the COVID-19 emergency to bolden his power in Azerbaijan, condemning an \u201cemerging pattern of politically motivated attacks on Azerbaijani civil society.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n Calling the newly launched crackdown on civil movements in Azerbaijan \u201cunacceptable\u201d the Steering Committe says \u201cany limitations on the movements of Azerbaijan\u2019s citizens, adopted ostensibly in response to the ongoing global pandemic, are likely to be abused to the benefit of the ruling regime.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n <\/a>
\n \u2013 a member of the opposition Musavat political party and the National Council of Democratic Forces \u2013 represents a worrying prelude to what may be to come,\u201d the statement adds.\n<\/p>\n

\n President Aliyev announced, in his annual Novruz address, a state of emergency to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in the country when he clearly called for \u201cthe isolation of representatives of the fifth column\u201d, meaning opposition members and dissident voices, saying it would be \u201ca historic necessity.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
