The US Justice Department filed the<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/ifact.ge\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/rolls-royce_information.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n    suit<br \/>\n  <\/a><br \/>\n  because an American company was involved and because it considered SOCAR to be \u201ccontrolled by the Azeri government and performed government functions for Azerbaijan.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Rolls-Royce admits that RRESI through an intermediary made over $7.8 million in corrupt payments between 2000 and 2009 \u201cto bribe foreign officials at SOCAR\u201d. The suit calculated that RRESI earned profits of over $50 million on turbine deals in Azerbaijan.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2016\/jul\/19\/serious-office-opens-criminal-investigation-into-unaoil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n    United Kingdom\u2019s Serious Fraud Office<br \/>\n  <\/a><br \/>\n  identified Unaoil as an intermediary company in fraudulent oil deals with many companies including Rolls-Royce. According to reporting by The Guardian newspaper, Rolls-Royce was using Unaoil\u2019s help to secure contracts in Azerbaijan as early as 2001.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Rolls-Royce deals in Azerbaijan include:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n      Over $50 million in 2002 for five huge<br \/>\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theengineer.co.uk\/issues\/25-january-2002\/rolls-royce-signs-50-million-azerbaijan-oil-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n        generators<br \/>\n      <\/a><br \/>\n      ; three for the Sangachal onshore oil processing facility and two for Caspian Sea offshore platforms\n    <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n      Four<br \/>\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/azertag.az\/xeber\/MATBUAT_NUMAYANDALARI_ATA_ALYANSININ_TIKINTI_QURASDIRMA_SAHASINDA_DUNYA_SAVIYYALI_QURGU_ILA_TANIS_OLMUSLAR-324395\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n        turbines<br \/>\n      <\/a><br \/>\n      that were assembled in 2005 for offshore platforms\n    <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n      A 120 million euro<br \/>\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rolls-royce.com\/media\/press-releases-archive\/yr-2007\/rr-wins-totalcare.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n        service contract<br \/>\n      <\/a><br \/>\n      in 2007 to service 28 turbines both onshore and offshore\n    <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n      Five<br \/>\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rolls-royce.com\/~\/media\/Files\/R\/Rolls-Royce\/documents\/investors\/annual-reports\/rrplc-consolidated-accounts09-tcm92-19313.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n        turbines<br \/>\n      <\/a><br \/>\n      ordered in 2009 for an offshore platform\n    <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n      $50 million in July 2011 for three huge<br \/>\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bp.com\/az_az\/caspian\/press\/pressreleases\/Chirag-Neft-Layihesi-ucun-3-enerji-bloku.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n        energy units<br \/>\n      <\/a><br \/>\n      at the West Chirag offshore platform\n    <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n  Other Rolls-Royce business in Azerbaijan:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.press.rolls-roycemotorcars.com\/rolls-royce-motor-cars-pressclub\/article\/detail\/T0195507EN\/rolls-royce-opens-first-showroom-in-azerbaijan?language=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n        Improtex Motors<br \/>\n      <\/a><br \/>\n      opened a 300 square meter Rolls-Royce dealership in 2014. Improtex Motors belongs to Improtex Group. Its president was<br \/>\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.occrp.org\/en\/azerbaijanilaundromat\/profiles\/improtex-group\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n        Fizuli Alakbarov<br \/>\n      <\/a><br \/>\n      until 2006, when he became Minister of Labor and handed the company over to his wife\n    <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n      Azerbaijan Airlines bought Rolls-Royce engines for 4 Boeing 707, 2 Airbus A340 and 1 Gulfstream\n    <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n  The American suit also listed bribes in Angola, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Brazil and Thailand.
