{"id":184309,"date":"2017-05-15T11:28:20","date_gmt":"2017-05-15T11:28:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.meydan.tv\/article\/ny-court-grants-appeal-for-intl-bank-of-azerbaijan-debt-restructuring\/"},"modified":"2021-10-29T14:05:06","modified_gmt":"2021-10-29T10:05:06","slug":"ny-court-grants-appeal-for-intl-bank-of-azerbaijan-debt-restructuring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.meydan.tv\/en\/article\/ny-court-grants-appeal-for-intl-bank-of-azerbaijan-debt-restructuring\/","title":{"rendered":"NY Court Grants Appeal for Int&#8217;l Bank of Azerbaijan Debt Restructuring"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\">\n  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meydan.tv\/az\/83989\/\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-83989\"\/><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\n  A New York<br \/>\n  <a href=\"http:\/\/voicepress.az\/en\/olke\/1463-new-york-court-agrees-to-protect-intvl-bank-of-azerbaijan.html\"><br \/>\n    court<br \/>\n  <\/a><br \/>\n  has agreed to support the International Bank of Azerbaijan (IBA) during its process of restructuring of some $3.3 billion in debt.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The<br \/>\n  <a href=\"http:\/\/eurasiadiary.com\/en\/news\/economy\/139050-new-york-court-agrees-to-protect-intl-bank-of-azerbaijan\"><br \/>\n    decision<br \/>\n  <\/a><br \/>\n  was handed down on May 12.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  IBA lodged the appeal to protect four U.S.-located, \u201ccorrespondent accounts\u201d that are used to complete various dollar-denominated transactions,<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-05-11\/top-azeri-bank-halts-foreign-debt-payments-plans-restructuring\"><br \/>\n    Bloomberg<br \/>\n  <\/a><br \/>\n  reports.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The bank sought chapter 15 protection, a part of the US bankruptcy code that covers international insolvencies and the court decision entails that foreign creditors will not be able to make claims against the assets of the International Bank of Azerbaijan (IBA) during the reconstruction process.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Khalid Akhadov, chairman of the IBA\u2019s board, has welcomed the court decision.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cOur appeal was granted by the court, and this shows that we are taking the right steps to successfully complete the restructuring process\u201d, Akhadov was quoted by<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azernews.az\/business\/112971.html\"><br \/>\n    local media<br \/>\n  <\/a><br \/>\n  as saying.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The IBA has suffered from severe losses over the last few years due to the the decline in world oil prices and subsequent currency fluctuations. Therefore the bank undertook a process of voluntary restructuring in order to address its deteriorating financial position.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cIBA is in a difficult financial position, as our financial results for 2016 will show. \u00a0However, I am hopeful that with the support of holders of our foreign currency obligations for our restructuring plan, the future financial viability of the Bank can be assured\u201d, Akhadov was quoted in an<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibar.az\/en\/news\/international-bank-of-azerbaijan-announces-measures-to-stabilize-its-financial-position\/\"><br \/>\n    official statement<br \/>\n  <\/a><br \/>\n  of the bank as saying.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Samir Sharifov, the Minister of Finance of Azerbaijan underlined the importance of the restructuring process.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThe Ministry of Finance has noted with concern the deteriorating financial and capital position of International Bank of Azerbaijan. \u00a0Re-establishing the financial viability of IBA is critical so that the Bank can continue to provide important banking services to the Azerbaijan economy. The steps that are currently being taken by the Bank are essential for achieving financial stability, and are being undertaken with the full support of the Ministry of Finance\u201d, Sharifov said in an<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibar.az\/en\/news\/international-bank-of-azerbaijan-announces-measures-to-stabilize-its-financial-position\/\"><br \/>\n    official statement<br \/>\n  <\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibar.az\/en\/about-bank\/bank-at-a-glance\/\"><br \/>\n    International Bank of Azerbaijan<br \/>\n  <\/a><br \/>\n  was established in 1992 in Baku.
