{"id":183176,"date":"2017-03-14T16:25:15","date_gmt":"2017-03-14T16:25:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.meydan.tv\/article\/blogger-mehman-huseynov-needs-surgery-says-lawyer\/"},"modified":"2021-10-29T13:55:22","modified_gmt":"2021-10-29T09:55:22","slug":"blogger-mehman-huseynov-needs-surgery-says-lawyer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.meydan.tv\/en\/article\/blogger-mehman-huseynov-needs-surgery-says-lawyer\/","title":{"rendered":"Blogger Mehman Huseynov Needs Surgery, Says Lawyer"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\">\n  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meydan.tv\/az\/80753\/\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80753\"\/><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\n  Imprisoned Azerbaijani journalist Mehman Huseynov\u2019s lawyer has complained of \u201cgross violations\u201d of his client\u2019s human rights in prison.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The blogger and advocate for press freedom was sentenced to two years in prison on March 3 for defamation, following his claim that Azerbaijani police officers had beaten him.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cMehman Huseynov\u2019s mood is good,\u201d Elchin Sadiqov, his lawyer, told Meydan TV. \u00a0\u201cBut he has serious health issues\u201d.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Huseynov struggled with varicose veins prior to his arrest in January this year, but the ailment is worsening due to conditions in prison and causing him pain, Sadiqov said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Sadiqov will be appealing to the Penitentiary Service of the Ministry of Justice in order to secure his client access to medical treatment, including surgery.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Previously, Huseynov has reported suffering torture whilst in custody, according to a letter condemning his treatment signed by 19 human rights groups, including PEN International and Reporters Without Borders.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Huseynov has also been denied communication with his family since his arrest, causing him significant distress and anxiety, Sadiqov said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Sadiqov has already appealed to the management of the Penitentiary Service and the Human Rights Attorney-Ombudsperson on the subject, but said that \u201cnecessary action has not been taken yet\u201d.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  It was not possible to receive any information from the Penitentiary Service on this issue.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Huseynov has also not been permitted to receive books sent to him, as authorities claimed one of the books contravened censorship rules. It is a book that is actually widely available, Sadiqov said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Overall, Huseynov\u2019s treatment represents a \u201cgross violation of legislation on prisoners rights,\u201d Sadiqov said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Huseynov was first detained on January 9 and accused of resisting arrest. However, he was released the next day after being fined 200 AZN.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Following his release, Huseynov spoke publicly of the torture he had suffered in detention, a charge that Azerbaijan\u2019s Ministry of Internal Affairs strongly denied. Nasimi District Police Department chief Musa Musayev appealed to the court, accusing the blogger of slander.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The police chief\u2019s defamation complaint was investigated by the court and Huseynov was subsequently arrested again on 3 March.
