{"id":182633,"date":"2017-02-19T16:46:03","date_gmt":"2017-02-19T16:46:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.meydan.tv\/article\/echr-lawyer-denied-entry-to-azerbaijan-reason-unclear\/"},"modified":"2021-10-29T13:50:27","modified_gmt":"2021-10-29T09:50:27","slug":"echr-lawyer-denied-entry-to-azerbaijan-reason-unclear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.meydan.tv\/en\/article\/echr-lawyer-denied-entry-to-azerbaijan-reason-unclear\/","title":{"rendered":"ECHR Lawyer Denied Entry to Azerbaijan, Reason Unclear"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\">\n  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meydan.tv\/az\/79350\/\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-79350\"\/><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\n  Lawyer Ramute Remezaite was denied entry to Azerbaijan last week after arriving on a flight from London \u2013 becoming one of many international human rights monitors and journalists to be barred from the country in recent years.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The Azerbaijani government pursued a \u201csustained crackdown\u201d on independent and critical voices in 2016, with 25 human rights defenders currently imprisoned on politically motivated charges according to the latest Human Rights Watch World Report.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cNow it is my turn to know that I am a persona non grata in Azerbaijan,\u201d Remezaite told Turan News Agency, noting that she likely will not be able to return to Azerbaijan for some time.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cIf you defend human rights and don\u2019t keep silent when rights and freedoms are violated in this country, they will not let you in\u201d, she told Meydan TV.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Remezaite arrived at Baku airport on February 7 with a valid visa received from the Embassy of Azerbaijan in London, but was told by border control officers that there was a \u201cmark\u201d by her name in their system meaning she could not enter the country.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The lawyer was held for eight hours overnight, without her passport and accompanied by three airport security personnel. Her requests for an explanation were denied.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Though officials stressed that she had not violated any immigration rules and was not being deported, Remezaite was later escorted onto a plane to Istanbul.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Remezaite is a human rights lawyer who has worked on Azerbaijan for the past five years, representing individuals from the country, as well as from Russia and Georgia, at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
