Poor living conditions force family to seek shelter in mosque

Khalida Bagirova and her daughter Maryam, who has been suffering from painful muscle cramps since childhood, live in a small, run-down house that leaks whenever it rains. Their only income is Khalida’s pension, some 147 manat ($86), which is not enough to make ends meet, let alone pay for the medical treatment Maryam requires. When their house gets too cold and moist, the two women seek shelter at the local mosque, the only place they say they can go to.

, their situation has fortunately changed. People supported the family with food, clothes and contributions to pay off their debt. A construction company has furthermore offered to build them a new house, providing them with an apartment in the meantime.
