Peace Activist Georgi Vanyan passes away

The human rights activist reportedly died of coronavirus.

The head of the Caucasus Center for Peacekeeping Initiatives, human rights activist Georgi Vanyan has reportedly died as a result of a coronavirus infection in Tbilisi on 15 October.

Political activist Emin Milli posted the information on his Facebook page. He said that Georgi Vanyan was taken to Tbilisi hospital in critical condition on 9 October and had been being treated there.

Vanyan had been a proponent for peace in the region, and his Tekali peace process idea included the creation of a debate between public figures from the three South Caucasian countries, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia.

G.Vanyan was born in 1963 in Garachinar village of Goranboy region of Azerbaijan. He graduated from Yerevan State University in 1991 with a degree in theater and cinema. In recent years, Georgi Vanyan lived in the village of Sakhkavan in the Tavush region of Armenia.

He had at one time received death threats for offering to hold a festival of Azerbaijani films in Armenia and recommending Armenia apologize for the Khojaly Massacre in February 1992.

For many years, Georgi Vanyan called on his compatriots to recognize Karabakh as the territory of Azerbaijan.
