Opposition ReAl Party goes for snap election in bloc

“In case they are elected into the parliament, they will function as a single bloc,” Mammadov was quoted as saying.

The opposition Republican Alternative Party (ReAl) will head to the polls of the upcoming snap general elections in the form of a bloc, the party chair Ilgar Mammadov stated.

Calling the newly established bloc ReAl Union of Republicans, Mammadov said it will bring together both independent candidates and those from the party.

“In case they are elected into the parliament, they will function as a single bloc," Mammadov was quoted as saying.

He added that if any organizations or individuals supporting their positions would like to join the bloc, their appeals will be considered.

Besides ReAl, Musavat Party and several other parties in opposition are also prepared to take part in the snap parliamentary elections. The National Council has stated it will boycott the upcoming general elections, though. According to the National Council, there are no minimum opportunities for free and fair elections in the country.

The Central Election Committee refuted the claim.

On 28 November, the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) lawmakers appealed for the dismissal of parliament. The YAP Political Council has announced that the decision had been made to support President Ilham Aliyev-initiated political reforms. On 2 December, the national assembly appealed to the president with a request to dismiss the parliament and call for early general elections. The president sent a request to the Constitutional Court to see if it was in line with the legal basis of the country. On 4 December, the Constitutional Court ruled in favor of the president’s request and early general elections were approved.

A day later, the president issued a decree on the appointment of the snap election for 9 February 2020.

The parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan were to be held in November 2020.
