Detainee released in online court in Azerbaijan

A detainee has been released in an online trial in Azerbaijan.

A detainee has been released in an online trial in Azerbaijan, his lawyer Adam Mammadov told RFE/RL Azerbaijani Service on 2 April.

Sahib Mustafayev had been in jail for nine months. He was charged over fraud and extensive damage he inflicted on a victim. Although his pre-trial detention has expired, the investigation was not complete. Therefore, the prosecutor's office filed a lawsuit to extend his detention, according to Mammadov.

During the trial the Khatai District Court hearing, which was held online, the judge, lawyer, and the investigator were in the court while the plaintiff was still in custody.

"There is a courtroom in the Baku pre-trial detention center. The person whose rights I defended also spoke to us on video," Mammadov said.

At the end of the trial, the prosecutor's appeal was denied and with it the extension Mustafayev’s detention.
